In Shigatse, Tibet

Up in the altitudes of 3900m above sea level.. i am blogging. Haha. Though i am in a Buddhist country, visiting Temples and holy lakes, the wondrous views of the mountains, valleys, rivers, skies, etc simply make me look to God in awe. Throughout the trip, a song rings in my head

Down in the valley with my Savior I would go

Down in the valley with my Savior I would go,
Where the flowers are blooming and the sweet waters flow;
Everywhere He leads me I would follow, follow on,
Walking in His footsteps till the crown be won.

Follow! follow! I would follow Jesus!
Anywhere, everywhere, I would follow on!
Follow! follow! I would follow Jesus!
Everywhere He leads me I would follow on!

Down in the valley with my Savior I would go,
Where the storms are sweeping and the dark waters flow;
With His hand to lead me I will never, never fear,
Dangers cannot fright me if my Lord is near.

Down in the valley, or upon the mountain steep,
Close beside my Savior would my heart ever keep;
He will lead me safely in the path that He has trod,
Up to where they gather in the rest of God.

I am off to Mount Everest Base Camp tomorrow. Pray hard for NO clouds so that i can take beautiful pictures of the peak of the highest point on earth. ^_^

Await my many many nice photos of nature, of touristy places in Tibet, of the culture here, fun pictures, and random shots like a COMPLETE, CIRCULAR RAINBOW!~~

Glory Church Camp 2007 – Glueing in Fellowship

My first time to church camp, and it ROCKED!! ^_^ Been to numerous youth camps since.. –ahem- years ago.. but never made it to church camp (with adults and kids and all) until this year! This time round, it was held at the Tanjong Puteri Golf Resort. Ah.. lots lots lots to say.. but I have only 24 hours left to unpack/do laundry/read letters and emails/settle lots of employment admin/study for GRE/pack/sleep/buy necessities.. before I fly off again tmr night. >.<

Thus… only gonna jot down all the main things tt happened:

  1. PURPOSE OF JOINING CAMP: Before the camp, I managed to grab hold of the camp group listings, and discovered tt from the 14 group members (Kalipok is my group!), I only knew 1 other person! (Nic aka Adam =P) Geez. But that was one of the main purposes of me joining the camp. To get to know more people other than the youths. Amongst the 5 youths in my group, 3 of them were new faces to me. The remaining were 4 adult couples, some who have children who are already youths. So it was really fun getting to know them.. ^_^ Purpose of camp met~

  1. SERVING: Yeah. Haven’t really been fully committed to any particular ministry in church since I left for US last jan. Recently I went back to help in the thai ministry for a month, and then also helped out in the games for a youth outing. It was really fun. And during the camp, ah-roy and stan were in charge of the games, and thus I got recruited to help them. My station was to make all campers run around and eat gross stuff like that in fear factor! HA! It was lots of fun man. But of course, fun aside, it felt really good to be of help to them. Most of all, it was the satisfaction at the end of the day, when everyone gave such wonderful feedback about the games, and to see all the campers bond together as a result of it. Reminded me of why I like organizing activities in sec sch, JC, uni.. Really thankful for the opportunity to help out in church again. Thanks to ah-roy n stan for roping me in ^_^

  1. FELLOWSHIP: Besides getting to know new people, this camp also allowed me to spend more time with people I already know, but have been spending little time with. Yar. Dunno why, but since I came back from US, I haven’t been hanging out much with many church people except for my CG. Thus, this camp gave me opportunity to spend more time with other people too. ^_^ can’t believe I haven’t met some of them for months, even though we attend the same church! >.<

Yeah. That’s the main gist of all that happened. Of course, there’s the fun, the food, the skits, the jokes etc. Those will have to wait til I return from my holidays. And after I grab hold of those photos. ^_^ Ciao~

I love...

Arzhou tagged me with this meme to talk about my favorite food in my country/state.

This is a really no-brainer for me. Some food that i love in Singapore? It just gotta be Fried Carrot Cake! Not the black one fried with sweet sauce, but the white one. It cannot be loosely in piece, but compact in SQUARES. That's the way i like it. And there's only ONE place in singapore that can make it the way i love it. Bukit Timah Market. Yeah.. my record was carrot cake for 3 days in a row!! ^_^ I've been having carrot cake from that very stall ever since i was a kid. I don't even know how many generations of people have sold carrot cake there already. I don't know the name of the stall, but if u enter bukit timah market from the center staircase, it is right at the other end of the hawker centre (walk straight to the end). It is situated amongst a row of carrot cake stalls, with the one and only bright yellow carrot cake sign. The numerous newspaper cuttings that line the stall make it an easy find. ^_^

Some information taken from Uniquely Singapore webby..

Fried Carrot Cake
Ingredients
4 radish flour cakes
4 tbs vegetable oil or lard
1 tbs chopped garlic
1 tbs red chilli paste
1 tbs chopped chye poh (salted radish)
2 eggs
1 tbs fish sauce
1 stalk fresh spring onion, chopped
5 tbs oil

Method
Heat two tablespoons of oil or lard in a wok. When smoking hot, brown the radish flour cakes, cutting it into small pieces with the spatula as you fry. Push aside the pieces. Heat another table spoon of oil in the wok. Sauté garlic and chye poh till browned. Toss with the radish cake pieces. Make a space in the middle, add the last of the oil and break eggs into the space. Leave to set for a few minutes and then push the radish cake on top. Drizzle with fish sauce, add chilli paste and toss some more to ensure an even mix. Serve hot garnished with spring onion.

Taken from cookbook titled “Singapore Heritage Food” by Sylvia Tan

A popular Chinese dish that used to be eaten for breakfast, is now eaten at all hours. Teochew in origin, it started out fried and scrambled, until the 1970s when a smart hawker in Toa Payoh fried it crisp like a pancake, followed soon after by the Hong Kong dim sum chef’s version - steamed with a seasoned soya sauce.

Char Kuay Tiaw..

I was at Beach Road Market aka Army Market @ beach road.. to buy a backpack, when i tried this fantabulous char kuay tiaw. Besides the normal sweet black sauce and the 'hums' (cockles), what made this char kuay tiaw so unique is the enormous serving of boiled vegetables layered on top of the plate of oily, sinful char kuay tiaw, with a spoonful of deep fried crispy ikan bilis. YUM~~

(with these 2 additional stuff, it made the meal a wee bit healthier too! ^_^)

The stall is on the 2nd level, name is 91. (And i think the stall number too)

Youth outing to Bishan Park

Haven't joined in much Youth activity since last year. Just happened to be holidays, and i was free, hence i volunteered to help Leon with the youth outing to Bishan Park. It was fun planning the games.. and really thankful for ziping, rose and ben who were so helpful in making the games work. ^_^

Victory to vulnerability

Stayed home to listen to a Philly sermon today. It was titled “Victory to Vulnerability”, from 1Kings 18:41-19:10.

41 And Elijah said to Ahab, "Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain." 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.
43 "Go and look toward the sea," he told his servant. And he went up and looked.
"There is nothing there," he said.
Seven times Elijah said, "Go back."
44 The seventh time the servant reported, "A cloud as small as a man's hand is rising from the sea."
So Elijah said, "Go and tell Ahab, 'Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.' "
45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel. 46 The power of the LORD came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
1 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them."
3 Elijah was afraid [a] and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." 5 Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep.
All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat." 6 He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
7 The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, "Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you." 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night.

The LORD Appears to Elijah
And the word of the LORD came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
10 He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."

Summary:

In Chapter 18, Elijah was portrayed as a man of God, fighting a war with strength and zest. However, in Chapter 19, we see a reverse transformation, a total burnout. Elijah becomes a man afraid of just something Jezebel said, and started complaining to God. (He complained that he had been zealous, but all the prophets have been put to death, with him being the sole survivor. However, it must be noted that Elijah had previously talked to Obadiah, who had told Elijah that he had hidden 100 prophets in a cave.)

Things to note about this passage:

1. The Bible is very real. It doesn’t portray people the way they should be looked up upon, but with the very nature of men. (Besides Elijah, other characters in the Bible like David were also God-fearing but also had their times of vulnerability)
2. God’s grace is there to restore those who are weak and fall.
3. God encourages and strengthens
4. It is important to follow Jesus Christ, and not a man/prophet. (Imagine, if you were following a man like Elijah, full of admiration until chapter 18. Then, suddenly, this man fails and your admiration for him will crush you)

So what caused Elijah to burnout?

1. False expectations result in discouragement
2. Tired physically
3. Spiritually fatigued
4. Fury of the war. (This war will keep going until Jesus returns)
5. Lost focus on God

Solution?

1. Sleep. Rest
2. Spend time alone with God, reading the Bible

Above all else, guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life. (Proverbs 4:23)

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2)

use your skills wisely

Actually, Lin and I don’t get to have long chats very often. Busy bah. But, everytime I talk to her, I learn a lot. This time round.. we were talking about music. And somewhere in the conversation, she asked me a question, “why do you think you’re not talented in music?”

After a long discussion, it all boiled down to me being lazy and a lack of discipline to practice hard. Of course talent is one thing.. but practice is just as important, and I lack that terribly. She said tt I must put myself in a situation where I will be forced to practice. Yeah.. I noe.. but I have been procrastinating too much. I must find Footprints to force me soon. >.<

Back to Timbre after a grand hiatus

Finally, Lin managed to make it! ^_^ This is the first time I chose that central table.. I specified while making the reservation. Indeed, it is the BEST seat in the house! Not in terms of happening-ness (coz the usual bar counter seats are still most happening), but rather best seats in terms of view of the stage. Centre, yet not too in front to get a neck ache. ^_^ Better view of the band, in exchange for the band brushing past all the time. Haha.

While waiting for Lin to arrive, I suddenly discovered 6 people dressed in white, seated on stage. It was 9pm. A Mexican band, called Ensamble Continuo. Apparently, it was the 2nd event for arts festival, and they had a band which had just flown 26 hrs over from mexico! I didn’t get all this information until I got home tonite, thus I got a shock when they went up on stage! I thought timmy was playing! But well. It was nice. Not as fantastic as the New Orleans band I heard for mardi gras, but impressive nonetheless. They blended Hispanic baroque guitar music and contemporary jaran music from Veracruz, bringing together the past and the present through a celebration in song, music and dance. (ah. all these are taken from the email from timbre. I am not so pro. XD)
A short clip I took of Ensamble Continuo in action.

The lady dancing along ^_^ SO cool tt the band includes a dancer!

At 10pm, they left the stage. I was quite happy actually. Coz Lin n I were at timbre for timmy. Yet, none of the timmy members were in sight. 15 minutes later, a guy with spiky hair and carrying a guitar walked towards the stage. “Oh yikes. New band playing today!” I thought to myself. Have been away from timbre so long that timmy isn’t playing anymore? I was so tempted to ask D about it. Then as I panicked, I saw. Hey. No. That guy with spiky hair was C, who’d gotten a haircut! No more cap! Whoahaha.. It was Timmy alright!! They’re back!! (or rather, I am back to see them XD) Never have I been so elated at seeing timmy set up their instruments ok. Lin and I had waited so long for this day. I’ve been telling her abt this band since day1, but we hadn’t had a chance to come til now!

A central view of timmy.

Compare that to the side view we used to have.

Of course, Timmy didn’t fail to play good songs. Pleasing to the ear. Especially after so long of not hearing them. ^_^ And it was nice to see new stuff each time. Ngak seemed abit hyper initially, and actually dragged a bdae gal up on stage. Then later he matchmaked tt gal with another guy. -__-. When I saw that, I told Lin to hold on to our dedication slip. I didn’t want to risk ending up on stage!! >.<

(and I realized, that was my first video of timmy! ^_^ good to have such a nice seat.. just a wee bit TOO central, tt the drummer was mostly blocked by ngak. But.. I still like it ^_^)

And I realized another thing. Though I go to timbre so often, I am NEVER the most high person around. This time round, Lin was the one who was high. (so glad she didn’t take any alcohol!) Whenever the band started playing, especially with eric on the electric guitar, she’d be ultra excited abt how skilled they are. Must be due to her being someone who plays electric guitar too. Well, in her excitement, I learnt a couple of technical terms for various fanciful stuff played on the electric guitar. =P (yeah. And I used to think it’s so difficult to play something that sounds delayed, coz have to plan the playing half a beat before it is supposed to appear in the song. Then Lin corrected me.. it’s on purpose! And can be adjusted.. how much delay etc.. haha. Ok. Me-naïve >.<)

‘Twas really nice spending a night chilling out. And catching up. Ooh. And Lin introduced 2 new friends to me. A senior Liren from hcjc, and his friend Edgar, who’s a pastor/missionary! Ultra cool guys.. AND AND AND! My sis finally made it to Timbre to listen to Timmy too!! ^_^ thanks to her, this trip to timbre was one of the cheapest. (the cab fares usually add up to almost double the price of my drink! I hate midnight charges.)

Now.. Lin’s my new timbre buddy! Lalala~ At least, someone who doesn’t go there just to see PEOPLE. We go there for the MUSIC. I would never pay $$ just to see people. What a waste of $$ to do that.

Gal.. see you back there after Everest!! ^_^

Dharni the BEST beatboxer

Just saw Arzhou's latest blog entry. 3 youtube videos on some "singapore's best beatboxer". WHOA.. tricked me into watching steven lim beatboxing!!

Now now.. lemme show you all what is REALLY singapore's best beatboxer!!! Listen already also high!!!!

And one of him battling with another guy Zul.. amongst my all-time favourites.. i even bookmarked it on my lappy AND listed under my youtube favourites! ^_^

tortured

Had planned to take THE TEST in early august, with 2 weeks to study those 30,000 words and what not right after my Taiwan trip.

Yet, they had to spoil my plan. I am suddenly informed tt I have to pass the test BEFORE august, and they’ve specially planned a day for me. THEY PLANNED FOR ME!! 1 month before the day I had planned to take it. And so coincidentally, it is 1 of the 3 days I am ‘transiting’ in Singapore between my Tibet and Taiwan trips. I don’t know whether to be happy or sad. Happy, coz at least I can make it for this specially-arranged-test. Sad coz that means I have to bring my stuff to study DURING my trip to Tibet. Church camp definitely would be studying ler. HAIZ. There goes all the free time. Who asked me to have such poor English. Must study so many new words. Grr.

Yar. Luff. I still dunno why I must study ARABIC. ‘Kismet’ is the Arabic word for ‘fate’. And ‘phalanx’ is some formation of infantry carrying shields and spears (YES! Luff, NSmen.. luff!). And a ‘guy’ is a cable or chain attached to something that needs to be steadied. And ‘husband’ is to use sparingly or to conserve. You get what I mean. It’s not my fault that I don’t know the meaning of many of these words. >.<

3rd world wonder to visit (after Grand Canyon n Niagara Falls)

(i wrote this quite some time ago. can't believe i forgot to post it)

The closest I have been, was Luxor in Las Vegas. (Casino with an Egpyt theme)

I can’t really remember when was the time I started dreaming of egypt. Was it secondary school? It appears everywhere. Movies, cartoons (prince of egypt), magazines, discovery channel.. etcetc. Ever since many many years ago, I had wanted to go to egypt. It seemed like some unreachable land that I can only dream of. I never even dreamt of going to China, to Korea, to Disneyland, not even the United States. But over the years, I’ve traveled to all these places. All but THE place I had wanted to go all along. I want to travel the world, but THE place that I really want to go to is egypt. I can’t really pin point why actually. But I just wanna go. Go see the pyramids. Go float in the Dead Sea. Go try split the red sea. Go do many many things. But, I never dared to go. It seemed too.. ‘faraway’. Not in terms of distance, but.. unreachability. Somehow. And, being the very picky traveler I am, I would only travel when I find suitable travel partners. And GUESS WHAT? I think I have found just the right friends to go egypt together!! YES!!!! EGYPT!! My dream suddenly seems all so real to me!! So close!! Egypt is not so unreachable anymore!!!!! Thank God for FRIENDS!!!! ^_^

It wouldn’t be anytime soon, but still…

I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited I am so excited

missing T

met up with 1 of the 2 guys who'd be going to taiwan with fangers n i. we were walking along orchard, outside wisma, when i heard a familiar song. AH! the song that timmy plays almost every week. (i dunno the song name tho.. i always don't! >.<) the band wasn't bad.. but.. can't beat the voice of timmy. i miss them.

back home, sis was surprised i was back early. "never go timbre today?" i haven't been there for many weeks! lemme count..

18th april.. meant to go with weilin, but she fell sick. ended up meeting jinghui to discuss our tibet trip. we happened ot be at city hall, so we actually DID drop by timbre at 11pm. but.. as usual.. it's packed. ultra full. (we usually reserve seats). so we left lah. so paiseh i din dare to say bye to D, who saw us queuing.

25th.. meant to bring sapphy and her bf there.. but ended up going to haixiang for buffet instead! whoahaha good excahnge lah. i loved haixiang.. and my first trip to mustafa!! whoahaha

1st june.. meeting the pple i'm going taiwan with! of course more impt than chilling out at timbre..

8th.. my last friday in singapore before i travel the world. weilin! hope we really make it this time round!! ^_^

permed hair

And since everyone keeps asking me to go perm hair, let me announce.. that i once permed it in 2005!!! whoahaha... so long ago.. those photos are already out of my lappy, in my external HDD... but i happened to chance upon my friendster, and discovered tt i have some photos of me with permed hair there! hence... here u go! wendy with permed hair~~

Ah. those were taken with hall friends, at our outing to fullerton hotel. free chocolate buffet. ooh... how i miss those days~~ >.<

should i.. should i get a... MAC?

so pretty. mac. reason i didn't get it was coz i don't know how to use it, and i am too lazy to learn. of course, there's the incompatibility, the cost etc.

But i didn't know that mac users see totally different things when we chat on MSN. Like 2 totally different worlds. Hmmmm...

tibet analysis

My first day of slacking around. Feels good to finally have some time to do some stuff. LIke reading the ALL-MANDARIN tibet itinerary. Since the height affects the weather, and the weather affects what we wear, i had to do some analysis. there had been a great debate going on about weather we'd see the real base camp (at 5000m above sea level) or just a fake, touristy one. Coz lhasa is at 3500m, and we cannot ascend more than 500m a day. hence, i had to analyse every place of interest we were visiting.. and here's the conclusion i received:

egad ideas~

I had a surprise sprung on me today. Had to plan some icebreaker games (half hr) and a big team bonding game (1.5hr) for a group of about 50 youths aged ~12-18 yrs. Many pple contributed many good ideas. Ben came across this link that i thought was really good. It has many fantastic ideas for group games, icebreaker games, activities, indoors and outdoors, crafts, fellowships, bible studies etc. It's so complete. and the activities suggested there are really fresh and exciting! ^_^ i've added it to my blog links.. feel free to use it as reference when u run out of new ideas for your sunday school / youth group / any activities!
